NETWORKING IN THE ROCKIES
The 2002 Western Robbery Conference was held May 29th to 31st, 2002, at the Great Divide Lodge in Breckenridge, Colorado. Over 130 investigators from 10 states and Australia attended the conference.

The registration fee of $140.00 included tuition, conference materials, a CARI Directory (provided by Loomis, Fargo & Co.) and a certificate of completion. Door prizes, donated by many retail businesses, were given away during breaks. Two handguns (provided by Bantek West and CARI) were given away on the last day of the conference.

CARI provided a continental breakfast daily (provided by King Soopers and Safeway), lunch on Wednesday and Thursday (provided by CARI), and a dinner at the awards banquet on Wednesday evening (also provided by CARI).

A hospitality suite (sponsored by Budweiser, 7-11 and ICI Security Systems) was open to attendees each evening and provided not only a place to relax after the days activities, but an opportunity to network with robbery investigators and loss prevention personnel from around the country.

GUEST SPEAKERS
A number of very exciting persons spoke at the 2002 conference:

Dr. Rosemary Erickson, author of "Armed Robbers and their Crimes," discussed her research into how and why robbers choose their targets;

Investigator Patrick McCarthy, Chicago Police Department (retired), spoke on surveillances, stakeouts, gathering intelligence and developing informants;

Supervisory Special Agent John Lipka, Federal Bureau of Investigation, and Detective Tom Fisher, Denver Police Department, discussed international and domestic terrorism;

Chief Deputy D.A. Doug Jackson, Denver District Attorney's Office, talked about legal issues;

Dan Beckwith, Federal Bureau of Prisons, and Brian Parry, California Department of Corrections, lectured on prison gangs and their relationship to crime on the streets.

Detective Mark Woodward, Denver Police Department, presented a recap and analysis of 2001-02 serial robbers in the Metro-Denver area.

The Western Robbery Conference is open to all active and retired law enforcement personnel as well as qualified private security representatives (generally retail and bank loss prevention managers). The Conference consists of two and one half days of dynamic classroom instruction provided by experienced law enforcement personnel. Social functions are included to encourage class member interaction and development of professional contacts.
